The Washing

Compelled to remain with the washing in the warm sun, I composed these clothscapes, thinking about fabric, about clothing, about colour, about romance, about mothers.

I’ve been composing ‘clothscapes’ with my washing for several years - especially my own now-elderly mother Alice, who lives 4000 km away. Doing the washing is a ‘chore’ which both mum and I still strangely enjoy. Although we live on different sides of the continent, photographing the washing has gradually become an exploration of our relationship, our very different life trajectories and desires, through fabric, colour, and pattern. Creating this washing-line collage (featuring the clothes I took to WA for our family Christmas in 2022) was unexpectedly therapeutic.
