Compelled to remain with the washing in the warm sun, I composed these clothscapes, thinking about fabric, about clothing, about colour, about romance, about mothers.
The Washing
I’ve been composing ‘clothscapes’ with my washing for several years - especially given that my own now-elderly mother Alice, lives 4000 km away. Doing the washing is a ‘chore’ which both mum and I still strangely enjoy. Although we live on different sides of the continent, photographing the washing has gradually become an exploration of our relationship, our very different life trajectories and desires, through fabric, colour, and pattern. Creating these washing-line clothscapes in 2022 (L to R: Clothes I took to WA for our family Christmas, Places I’ve travelled and “You’d only see this fabric on the kitchen table in my day”) was unexpectedly therapeutic.
