I walk across our local oval, King George Park, most days, often passing through as a council worker paints fresh lines for upcoming sporting events such as athletics, soccer, and rugby league. The park rests against remnant bushland and as the line marker rolls forward, gum leaves on the ground are quietly painted over. Initially I picked up these leaves because they reminded me of the joy and colour of attending local sporting events here. But now I am drawn to consider the ways we mark, claim, and overlay this land.
